What is ISO 14001?

ISO 14001 is an international standard of environmental management:

- it is a document that contains a set of relatively simple sections, describing what is required to achieve certification to the ISO standard.

- certification means that your site or business is assessed by nationally accredited auditors and has achieved and continues to achieve the requirements of the Standard.

Why should I bother? What advantage does it give to my business?

What is EMAS?

EMAS is the European equivalent of ISO 14001. It has two distinct differences from ISO14001:

- It requires that you issue a fully audited public statement of your environmental activities at least every three years

- EMAS is withdrawn if the site is under threat of prosecution for an environmental offence

What is the difference between ISO 9001 and 14001?

ISO9001 is for product quality what ISO 14001 is for Environmental Management – they both require you to do what you say you do.

There is one important difference: ISO 14001 requires a commitment to continually improve.
